Threadless has a great hook. They hold weekly design contests and then actually make and sell the winners. Excellent!

Threadless is a company called Skinny Corp. They're Chicago guys, and I'm pretty sure they're still private. I wonder if they make money doing this stuff or not.

I have a zombie threadless t-shirt (I think) and I've gotten Christmas presents there in the past... the quality has been great.
