Spring training

MLB opening day is March 30, 2023.

There are lots of cool changes to the MLB schedule this year, www.mlb.com/news/2023-mlb-schedule

Of course, MLB rocked some HUGE changes to how the game will be played as well, www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-mlb-announces-rule-changes-for-2023-season

We should (must!) follows MLB's lead this season and makes some good, fun changes to LetsPlay3.

Ch-ch-ch-changes, www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl3vxEudif8.

I hope we can:

  • Increase the engagement of all owners in 2023. Understandably, things have gotten a bit loose since the pandemic. I hope to reverse this trend. How can we make LP3 more interesting and interactive? That, my dear Watson, is the question.
  • And let's consider other fun changes like... expanding to 16 teams, or trying new scoring cats, or splitting off into two divisions, or whatever. I'm not sure how to do any of this, but let's reply-all and explore lots of options.

Draft

OK — rock and roll...

The day/time of the 2023 LP3 draft will be:

Sat Mar 25 @ 3:00 pm (Chicago time)

Details:

  • The draft will be online on Yahoo.
  • We'll do 15 rounds online and then stop.
  • The last 5 rounds will happen one day at time from Mon Mar 27 through Mar 31. I'll email details on how these Mon-Fri selections will happen.

Finally, the classic. Print this out...to win:   lp3_draft_sheet.pdf

Draft results

Draft results...in a couple different forms. (shrug)

1) Yahoo's fancy/weird draft grid:

draft_results_grid1.png   ~   draft_results_grid2.png

2) Old school...snagging results from Draft/Draft results at the Yahoo league.

Rounds 1-3   ~   Rounds 4-6   ~   Rounds 7-9   ~   Rounds 10-12   ~   Rounds 13-15

3) In a panic (ha) over online draft problems, I created this PDF backup of our draft.

draft_results_backup.pdf

The last 5 rounds are Mon-Fri, one pick per day.

About LP3 changes

What about those (crazy) changes to our scoring this year?!? How are we going to deal with all that mess? Well, here are some ideas for you. They may help you. They may not. Either way, I don't want to hear about it. (smile)

1. Try Yahoo

Yahoo projections use our new stats. Goto our league and hit "Players". I'm not quite sure how good their projections are (cough), but whatevs. LetsPlay3: baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/letsplay3

2. About On-Base Percentage (OBP)

We're now using On-base Percentage (OBP) instead of Total Bases. Imho, this is biggest change that we made. Very few websites rank players using OBP, so we have to scrounge a bit.

The projections at Fangraphs has OBP. It's a nice setup where you can filter and sort players as you like. Enjoy, www.fangraphs.com/projections?pos=all&stats=bat&type=steamer

FantasyPros has OBP too, www.fantasypros.com/mlb/projections/hitters.php.

For fun, I created a spreadsheet from the FantasyPros projections, fantasypros_top200.ods. It's FantasyPro's Top 200 boppers and includes OBP. You can download this spreadsheet and fiddle with it however you like. Let me know if you want/need any other spreadsheet goodies.

That spreadsheet is from an open source guy called LibreOffice. It's free, easy to use, and I (very much) recommend it. You can download it here, www.libreoffice.org

3. What happened last year?

Projections are hard to find for these changes: Net SB, Quality starts, Net Save+Hold. But we can look at what happened last year, thanks to the MLB website.

4. 25 innings per week

We increased the minimum innings pitched per week from 15 to 25 innings. So, starters are more important. The days of rolling with 5 or 6 RP's might be coming to an end.

Alright, back of the envelope. There are 25 weeks in a season. A SP with 150 IP in a season means about 6 innings per week. A RP with 50 IP is about 2 innings per week.

To hit 25 innings, you'll probably need at least 4 starts during the week...plus your RP innings.

Regular season

Opening day — Aaron Judge hit the first home run of the 2023 season, MLB article.

LP3 All-Star team

The LP3 All-Star team consists of the top Yahoo-ranked players at each position at the MLB All-Star break (Tue Jul 11). Huzzah!

  • No team has more than two All-Star players. Top-ranked DG Revolution only has one All-Star.
  • OF and 1B are crowded postions. Honorable mentions: Matty O (atl) of Vat City #5, C Yelich (mil) of Boston #8, J Soto (sdg) of Friday Night #9, R Arozarena (tam) of Boston #10.

Ronald Acuña Jr (atl) is the best player on the best team in MLB.
His All-Star stat line: 79 run, 21 homer, 55 rbi, .408 obp, 34 net sb. (jiminy)

Ronald Acuña Jr (atl) is #1 at the break

Aux Stats

Yahoo provides some nice season stats, but they're only on the website, and they're hard to find. For some tasty Yahoo stats: 1) goto the Yahoo LetsPlay3 website, 2) scroll down to Standings and change the spinner from "Current Standings" to "Head-to-head Stats". Voilà!

The aux stats here aim to provide a little more in depth information on how your team is performing.

The aux stats are created from Yahoo's raw data each week. Here you go:

Everything below is a spreadsheet and a PDF file. If you see anything screwy, please email me.

Alright, that's it. Aux stats!

Zee playoffs

Alright, let's rock. Here's the playoff bracket.

And the LetsPlay3 2023 Champion is...

DG Revolution, owner: William T Krieger

Championship round

  • DG Revolution 5, Ronsby Swanson 4   [ boxscore ]

Championship week was a barn-burner with the outcome undecided until the final swings of Sunday Night Baseball!
Let's go to the videotape:

  • DG's speed attack was led by three players that each had 3 Net SB: C Carroll (ari), F Tatis Jr (sdg), and DG MVP Esty Ruiz (oak).
  • Ronsby was led by all-world slugger Bryce Harper (phi) who tallied 7 run, 3 hr, 8 rbi, .450 obp, and a sb.
  • The pitching results reflect the different styles of the two ballclubs. DG ran bullpen-heavy with 5 RP, and Ronsby featured a cadre of 9 SP.
  • Ronsby rallied on Sunday but was hampered all week by injuries. The team had no moves left to fill holes in the lineup.
  • This is a repeat title for DG. It also marks 3 championships in the last 4 years for... the fantasy Death Star.

Semifinal round

  • DG Revolution 7, Killer Rabbit 2   [ boxscore ]
  • Ronsby Swanson 5, Vatican City Pope 5 [ boxscore ]

Another playoff week. Two more good battles.
Semifinal notes:

  • After the bye week, it was a strong performance for top-seeded DG. The Revolution was led by stars Bobby Witt Jr (kc) with 6 SB and M Harris II (atl) with 4 hr.
  • N Castellanos (phi) led Killer Rabbit with 2 hr, 7 rbi, and 2 sb, but it wasn't enough to advance to the finals.
  • Ronsby MVP was C Rodon (nyy). Rodon was a Sunday pickup who tallied 10 K and the young team into the finals. Ronsby won on the playoff tiebreaker, with an 11-8-2 record over Vatican City in the regular season.
  • Vatican City was led by the team's Atlanta stars: M Olson and R Acuña Jr.. But losing 4 of 5 pitching categories ended the Pope's season.

Quarterfinal round

  • Killer Rabbit 6, KGG 2023 4   [ boxscore ]
  • Ronsby Swanson 6, CRYOGENIC TED 4   [ boxscore ]

Both quarterfinal games were intense, back-and-forth battles.
Let's go to the videotape...

  • Killer Rabbit dominated hitting with 14 home runs on the week. The Bunny MVP was M Semien (tex) who powered the team to victory with 8 run, 4 hr, 6 rbi, and .500 obp.
  • As the team did all season, KGG dominated pitching. The Kelly Green was led by surprise Cy Young candidate J Steele (cub) who had 2 quality starts, 18 K, 0.60 era, and 0.67 whip. (woah)
  • The balanced attack of Ronsby won the day. Leading the rookie franchise in bopping was G Springer (tor) with 5 run, 2 hr, 8 rbi, and .408 obp.
  • CRYO TED was led by catcher W Contreras (stl) with 4 run, 3 hr, 9 rbi, and .389 obp.

That's a wrap

It was a great and special year: LetsPlay3 2023.

  • Following MLB's lead, we had more rules changes in 2023 than ever before. The changes led to the closest regular season races in memory. The balanced scoring rules produced more exciting individual games as well.
  • For the first time, we rolled with 16 teams and two divisions: Mild and Spicy. Hopefully, we can continue with 16 teams next season.
  • Our two newbies, Ronsby Anthony and Friday Night Max, were very positive additions to the league. Thanks, lads!
  • To encourage more interaction, the weekly blather email went to a subscription model. That went well and will continue on next year.

This year marks our 20th FUN season of fantasy baseball. Huzzah to that!

Let fantasy baseball hibernation begin. I'll see you in 6 months.

thanks...yow, bill
