Sammie the Schipperke
Here are some Sammie the schipperke facts... Sammie is:
a schipperke
What the hell is a schipperke! Well here's what the
American Kennel Club says about them: Schipperke
- AKC Breed Standard.
Sammie is an AKC registered Schipperke. In our research,
the most interesting thing that we found out about
schipperkes was that they have the longest average life
span of any breed: almost 18 years!
just a pup
She was born on January 21, 1997. We got her in May.
named Opal Nera Sambuca
Opal Nera Sambuca is a black liqueur that tastes like
licorice. It tastes great and has a potent kick to it.
small
Sammie weighs about 12 pounds and is maybe a tad more
than a foot tall.
tail-less
- Sammie, like most schipperkes, was born without a tail.
Without a tail to wag, she shakes her whole body when
she's happy. This feature adds to her strange appearance
(see "not very attractive" below).
black as night
She is practically invisible in just a shadow... at
night, forget it. Sammie is so black, it's hard to get a
good photo of her. She's the blackest.
a pretty intelligent dog
She shakes hands. She will fetch balls and stuff that we
throw onto our second floor loft by hauling ass up and
down the stairs. Best of all, she knows her yard and
generally won't take off unless she's distracted by
something like another dog. We're not dog trainers or
anything, so these "feats" have all been
achieved with minimal time and expertise.
fierce
See picture above. She beats up our
dachsund Brownie when she's cranky. She doesn't seem
particularly happy to meet with any other dog for that
matter. She has an awesome growl to go with her angry
appearance.
incredibly loyal
As much as Sammie dislikes other dogs, she loves people,
especially us. Sammie goes crazy for any attention that
we shower on her: playing tug of war, scratching her,
combing her mop. After 5 seconds of barking, growling and
drooling in the direction of anyone new, she'll roll over
and ask for a quick belly rub.
good with kids
I know, I know, that's what everyone says. Sammie,
however, has been around some pretty rough 2 year olds
and never gotten pissed off. When she had her baby teeth,
her nipping could be painful, but she has never snapped
at anyone. Now, with her more rounded adult teeth, her
playful gnawing (which is constant) is no problem (except
for the drool).
not very attractive
OK, this is a bone of contention in our home. Some people
think Sammie is "cute", but I don't see how
this is possible. Sammie has bulging eyes, no tail, and a
wolf-like face and teeth. Her body shape is really weird.
It's hard to describe, but she has a longer coat around
her neck and shoulders that make her look lop-sided. Her
hind legs seem too long for her body, and maybe they are,
because she cannot walk without her butt swinging from
side to side. Sammie is a strange looking dog, and, in my
opinion, no beauty queen.
a garbage disposal
We have yet to find something that Sammie won't eat or
drink. A trip outside often includes munching on grass,
leaves, berries, worms, paint, etc. Sammie loves beer
(Sam Adams?).
Bottom line
I would recommend a schipperke to anyone looking for a
small dog that is a great companion and yet low
maintenance. Sammie rules!
